New Year resolution. Try to avoid thinking in binary terms and do my best to persuade others to do likewise. People tend to reduce complex matters to right vs wrong/good vs evil. This complicates matters and often makes things much worse. It is especially bad when it demeans opponents and causes us to dehumanized them. Think how you would feel if you were the brunt of somebody else's sanctimony! There are absolute evils, of course, but these are far and few between. Consider that your opponents might have some valid points and look for ways you might creatively make common cause. Practice humility and consider that maybe you have been wrong about some of the issues. Some problems can't be solved but most can be managed. People want to be righteous -- but need to avoid being self righteous. Simply backing one side of a cause or voting on a resolution is cheap grace--it feels good, but does it do good? Talk to opponents and, insofar as it is possible, make friends with them. Be a bridge builder.
